ANGLESEY ENERGY SURVEY - LESS SUPPORT FOR NUCLEAR POWER

An indepenent survey taken BEFORE the Fukushima disaster suggests that that the people of Anglesey were even then worried about radioactive waste and its effects on health as a result of bulidng Wylfa B.

According to the survey the majority want to see more re-newable energy and are unsure about the long-term effects of another nuclear power station on the island.

Three quarters of the individulas questioned for the survey would rather see jobs being created in re-newable energy.

Almost three quarters also said they were worried about radio-active waste being left on the site for 160 years.

The survey was commissioned by management consultants Mana-Cymru Ltd following a request from PAWB and carried out by Bangor University’s School of Social Sciences over the summer. A representative sample of 500 people from Anglesey and adjoining areas of Gwynedd were asked for their opinions..

Residents near atomic dump - far heigher cancer rate

An atomic dump in Germany has shown extreme radioactivity levels, causing concern amongst nearby residents. People in the area have had to be medically checked after findings that residents had higher rates of cancer than normal. Reports found twice the number of male leukemia cases between 2002-09. The rate of thyroid cancer trebled in women. The town of Wolfenbuettel lies in the Asse region of Lower Saxony, close to a controversial nuclear waste dump. +...

They said it couldn't happen

No sooner had the the news of problems at the Fukushima reactor broken than the pro-nuclear lobby were desperately spinning thier usual line about 'failsafe' engineering and only a 'small amount of radioactivity released' etc.

However the nuclear industry in Japan and elsewhere has a long history of cover-up and mismanagement, from Windscale to Three Mile Island to  Chernobyl (the radiation from that disaster still necessitates the monitoring of sheep movements at 300 of our own farms, 25 years after it happened).

If UK nuclear power plants are so safe and bring so many jobs - why are they located as far as possible from London? Politicians shouldn't be deluded by economic arguments for building a new nuclear power plant at Wylfa, Anglesey.

The old Wylfa plant was dogged by technical problems and couldn't be allowed to stay open longer and there are as many problems associated with new plants.

Toxic waste to be piled up by the side of a new plant for 160 years?

Photo of Nuclear Waste

No one has any idea what to do with the tonnes of dangerous waste that nuclear plants spew out.

It has even been suggested that a Wylfa development could have to keep waste on site for 160 years.

There is no guarantee that highly radioactive waste won't leak back into the environment, contaminating water supplies and the food chain.
Allowing new reactors to be built would add to the amount of highly radioactive waste we already have to deal with. This waste will remain dangerous for up to a million years: an outrageous legacy to leave for many generations to come.
